The Reuben ...

... is not always a sandwich.

Glen Keane has been named the recipient of the 2017 Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society. The trophy was presented at the annual NCS Annual Reuben Awards Weekend. ...

As Tom Sito relates: Since 1946, I think, this is the first time an animator ever won Cartoonist of the Year, even though Chuck Jones, Walt Kelly, Ralph Bakshi, and a bunch of us have been long time members. There are categories for Theatrical and Broadcast Animation, but this is the cartoonist version of The Best Picture Oscar...."

Mr. Keane, of course, has had the most distinguished animation career of anyone this side of Disney's "Nine Old Men." He continues to work in animation, most of it hand-drawn.
