Subdued Box Office

Not so big, this time around ...

The Cameron-produced Terminator: DF opens with middling grosses. There are now two animated features in the Box Office Ten, but the newer of the two, Arctic Dogs, is still-born, entering the steeple-chase at #10. Meantime, The Addams Family retains a strong hold on moviegoers' imaginations.

  1. The internet is taking unusual glee in how badly Arctic Dogs has performed. It's something I've noticed in recent years: that movies from smaller studios are universally derided. It's like there is no room for animated B movies anymore, and that audiences demand that everything live up the quality standards that Disney and Pixar have established. It's a dangerous thing for the industry, as a lot of jobs are going to be lost as these smaller movies having a hard time getting financed.

  2. I have a question for Steve Hulett that is a bit off-topic. I read this blog post in the Animation Guild blog: https://animationguildblog.blogspot.com/2014/12/union-friendly.html?m=1 Why were you so disrespectful to Cuban exiles and refugees that escaped Fidel Castro's authoritarian regime? It's not very nice to say "Happily, the older Miami Cubans who froth at the mouth at the mention of Fidel's name are dying off" Saying that they are better off dead is a disrespectful thing to say. What do Cubans in the Animation Guild think of this?

    1. Well, yes, it's completely off-topic. Also five years old. But you're right, it was a snotty way to phrase it.

What I should have said is: "Many younger Cubans take a different position from their elders on Fidel Castro." But it's confusing now, isn't it? What with Our President having a friendship with the North Korean leader, who, last I checked, was Communist, while at the same time not liking the Communists in Cuba. I guess some Communiists are better than other Communists.

You are the first person to bring up this topic. I knew one Cuban in the Guild, and he never brought this issue up. But then, some people are more sensitive about flip comments than others.
